By Dr. Lonnie Lowery
| In this one, Dr. L continues
with his methods of steering you toward bodybuilding success
with straightforward, chart-type thinking. Even a well
chosen destination requires a road map to ensure an athlete
is on the right path. This article offers a bit of tried and
true mental floss for anyone who has lofty goals but tends
to veer off the road toward reaching them. Don't bear the
weight of the world on your shoulders as you struggle - just
look like you could! |
When I was hard training young bodybuilder attending grad school
in San Diego, I had an epiphany. (I always thought that word sounded
feminine somehow, so let's say "auto-inspiration".)
My goals and accomplishments had been feeling hit-or-miss. My
brain's left hemisphere was demanding hard evidence of progress.
After all, why in the name of Joe Weider wasn't I applying a similar
level of quantification that I demanded from my research efforts?
It started
with what may be the most basic of all scientific principles: observe
and record.
 |
I took out a piece of paper
and wrote down where I wanted to be, weight-wise, at the start
of the approaching summer. I reduced this goal to a simple
number: 220 pounds. Since I was not up to that size yet, I
wrote down my current state of being at the bottom of the
page: 208 pounds.
I had a long way to go but I
also had the motivation to get there. I had saved some cash
and was prepared for some Herculean eating. Questions remained,
however, as to how to cover that vast empty distance of blank
paper between my current state and that lofty goal of where
I wanted to be.
|
Staring at the page, I drew an
arrow pointing from "now" to "then". After
all, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
Hmm. Such a quantum leap in progress seemed unrealistic. I drew
a label line next to the middle of the arrow, which spanned the
gap between 208 and 220 pounds. I quantified it in bold text: 214
pounds. (See line "A" on Figure 1.) That sounded a bit
less far fetched.
Then I applied the same logic to the
gap between "now" and the bold mid-mark of 214 pounds,
which still sounded like a lot. (See the "B" lines on
Figure 1.) Half way between these values, I placed another line
and the quantity of 211 pounds. Hmm. Three weeks to gain three pounds;
that's do-able! Of course this left a blank up near the top of the
Arrow Chart. Again applying the "split-in-half" logic,
I marked-in the value between my bold half way value (214 pounds)
and my final lofty goal of 220 pounds. This value of 217 pounds
more or less completed my road map to hugeness.
Here it is.

Chart"
