Dying Over Protein

Home Featured Articles David Barr Dying Over Protein

By David Barr

You know too many people who are overweight or obese. Worse yet, you know people who will die from health problems related to this.

So why is it, that in the midst of a obesity epidemic, with a diabetes epidemic looming larger than global warming, that doctors and nutritionists are still so anti-protein?

Dying Over Protein

We're not even talking performance or bodybuilding here (yet), we're simply talking about people's LIVES. Even the most callous and self-centered should be concerned about the health-related burden on the economy, and in spite of what we know is coming, it's still getting worse.

"Bad" Meaning Good?

We've been told that eggs are bad, but now eggs are good again. Fat was bad but now most fats are good again. Carbs are bad, but apparently so is protein. So we're not left with a lot of macronutrient options here are we? Are we supposed to live on fruits and vegetables? Well, it's possible to do so, and I have no doubt that we'd all be a lot healthier if we could manage something resembling a vegetarian diet, but that's not realistic (or something that most of us want to do).

What's clear is that something needs to change. This paradox between having the highest obesity rate in history, coupled with the greatest amount of health information and number of gym memberships can't continue.

And I don't mean that as a forceful "it really shouldn't continue", I mean that it literally can't continue because people are dying from it.

So why are we still being told that eating too much protein is "bad for you." Really?!

Are people really overweight because they're just eating too much protein?

It's not unlike when everyone started freaking out about the Glycemic index of carrots and vowed to stop eating them.

Really?!

Are people overweight because they're just eating too many damned carrots??

Getting Real

This anti-protein shtick was old a decade ago, but now it's just repugnant. I mean it's great to get people eating more vegetables (as we all should), but the fear of protein is pushing far too many people toward other Calorie sources. Now I'm not saying that protein, or even low-carb diets, are going to save the world, but at the very least we can stop bullshitting people.

Once we stop the propaganda we can begin to educate people about the right protein choices.

"No that commercial hamburger is NOT a good source of protein Sir." can only follow from the cessation of the "don't eat too much or your kidneys will explode!" inanity. With this must come the inevitable "no it is not considered health food because you have pickles and onions on it."

From this, I only ask that you do what you can to help this mess.

Raise your expectations. Raise The Barr!
